A horse that has worked alongside people for generations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Finnhorse is Finland’s native and national horse breed. Its studbook was established in 1907, but horses of this type had already worked alongside people in Finland for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finnhorses carried riders, pulled carts and sleighs and worked in fields and forests. They needed strength, balance and endurance, but also the ability to listen, wait and work together with a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As work and everyday life changed, the Finnhorse found new roles in riding, driving, harness racing, recreation and other activities. Its versatility is still one of the breed’s defining qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Ronivaara, that versatility is part of everyday life. Finnhorses carry riders through the forest, work in riding and horsemanship, pull a sleigh in winter and take part in different guided activities with people.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Roots, stones, slopes, snow and changing ground ask the horse to adjust every step. On the forest trails around Ronivaara, the Finnhorse moves with the terrain rather than simply through it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Finnhorse is often described as a versatile breed, but versatility does not look the same in every individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One horse moves confidently through the forest. Another enjoys more precise riding work. One is comfortable in harness, while another has particular strengths in groundwork or quiet interaction with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Ronivaara, each horse’s character, skills, health, experience and preferences help shape the activities that suit it. The breed gives many possibilities. The individual Finnhorse shows where its own strengths lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strength can also be patience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Finnhorse is a strong horse, but strength is also visible in quieter ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the forest, the horse needs balance and judgement. In harness, it needs to move steadily and respond to the driver. Under saddle, strength works together with coordination and sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the task is to move forward. Sometimes it is to stop, wait and remain attentive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This combination of physical ability and patience has been useful in many of the roles Finnhorses have had throughout their history \u2013 and it still matters when we work with them today.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

From fields and forests to new roles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Finnhorses once worked in Finnish fields and forests and transported people and goods. They were also important during the war years and in the rebuilding of Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mechanisation changed the work horses were needed for, but the Finnhorse continued in new roles \u2013 in riding, driving, harness racing, recreation and other ways of working alongside people.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The work has changed. The partnership remains.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Working together still begins with knowing the horse, communicating clearly and giving each other time to understand.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Working together means learning to notice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Communication with a horse happens through more than spoken commands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Finnhorse notices movement, direction, space, touch and timing. A sensitive horse may respond to a very small change in a person’s body, while another may need a clearer request and more time to understand what is being asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person also learns to read the horse: where its attention is, whether its body is relaxed or tense, how it approaches, moves away, waits or responds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Ronivaara, this kind of observation is part of riding, driving, groundwork, horse handling and everyday care. Working together becomes clearer when both the horse and the person have time to understand each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also why knowing the individual horse matters. The same request does not feel exactly the same with every Finnhorse.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Knowing the individual horse takes time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Working with a horse begins with knowing the horse in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each Finnhorse has its own history, temperament, physical abilities, experiences and preferences. Familiarity grows through ordinary days: handling, feeding, moving together, training, resting and observing the horse in its herd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, small things become familiar. You learn how the horse usually approaches, what catches its attention, how it responds to touch and movement and which companions it chooses to stay close to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That familiarity also makes changes easier to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Ronivaara, the horse’s health, behaviour, recovery, workload and willingness to take part are considered when the day’s activities are planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finnhorse is part of Finland’s cultural heritage, but its significance does not belong only to the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The breed continues through Finnhorses being bred, raised, trained, cared for and given meaningful roles in today’s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their work may look different from the work of earlier generations, but the qualities that made the Finnhorse valuable \u2013 versatility, strength, balance, cooperation and the ability to adapt to different tasks \u2013 still have a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finnhorses have been part of Ronivaara from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, horses of different ages, characters and strengths live here throughout the year. They ride, drive, learn, rest, spend time with their herds and take part in the different activities of the farm according to their individual skills and needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are experienced trail horses. Some enjoy driving. Some have particular strengths in riding or groundwork, and younger horses are still learning the skills that will become part of their adult lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finnhorse is easiest to understand by spending time with one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Ronivaara, you can meet Finnhorses on forest trails, around the farm, from the ground through horsemanship and interaction or in harness during a winter sleigh ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Finnhorse experiences are offered throughout the year. Sleigh rides belong to the snowy winter months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
