Life at Ronivaara continues through every season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finnhorses and other animals live here year-round, and most of our experiences follow the same rhythm. Trail rides, farm visits, private Finnhorse experiences, riding and horsemanship, and quieter encounters with the horses are offered through the changing seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The season brings its own character to each visit. A familiar forest trail feels different under winter snow, on spring ground, beside summer greenery or among autumn colours. In summer, the horses spend more of their time out on pasture. Autumn brings cooler mornings and frost, while winter changes the farm with snow and shorter days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horse-drawn sleigh rides belong to the snowy winter months.<\/strong><\/em> For the other experiences, the season changes the surroundings while life with the Finnhorses continues through the year.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year is part of everyday life here<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

At Ronivaara, the turning year is part of how everyday life is lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow, light, pasture, rain, frost and changing ground shape the horses’ days, the work around the farm and the way we move between the yard, paddocks, pastures and forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The animals give the year its familiar rhythm. They are fed, checked and cared for every day. The same horses are here when deep snow covers the yard, when meltwater begins to run in spring, when the herd moves out onto pasture and when the first autumn frost settles on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around them, the work follows the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow is moved where paths need to stay open. Spring brings fences, gates and pasture areas back into view after the winter. Summer takes the horses out onto pasture, and autumn turns the work towards the coming cold. Rain, frost, wear and fresh snow keep changing the ground beneath it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ronivaara is the same home through all of it, while every season brings another way of living and working here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same horses, people and everyday routines move from snow to spring thaw, summer pasture and autumn frost \u2013 each season bringing its own work, light and way of moving through the farm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Winter \u2013 snow, frost and the return of light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Winter settles deeply into Ronivaara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow softens the sounds around the farm. On cold days it squeaks under boots and hooves. During the blue hour, the yard, buildings and snow can all seem to turn the same shade of blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The horses continue their everyday life outdoors with their familiar herds. Snow and frost change the paths through the paddocks and yard, and the conditions underfoot are part of every day’s planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are ordinary winter jobs too. Snow needs moving from the places that have to stay open, and the yard and horse areas need to remain usable. The animals still wait for their food and care regardless of how much snow fell overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is also the time when the sleigh comes out. Behind a Finnhorse, its runners leave two narrow lines through the snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in winter, something starts to change before the snow itself does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The light returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On clear late-winter days, the sun reflects from the snow and the horses may stand with their sides turned towards its warmth. The yard is still white and the frost can still be hard, but the days no longer feel the same.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Spring \u2013 watching the farm appear again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spring comes little by little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First there is more light. Then a dark patch appears beside a wall or along a familiar path. Meltwater begins to run through the yard. Snowbanks become smaller, and places that have been hidden for months appear again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ground can change during a single day. A frozen surface in the morning may be soft by afternoon, while another part of Ronivaara is still covered in snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is plenty to look at as winter leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fences and gates appear again from beneath and beside the snow. Pasture areas are looked over after winter, and the farm begins preparing for the months when the horses will once again spend much of their time out on the grass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring at Ronivaara is not one dramatic moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is watching the farm come back piece by piece.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Summer \u2013 the horses move out onto pasture<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Summer opens Ronivaara outwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forests and slopes turn green, the days stretch late into the evening and the Finnhorses move onto their summer pastures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the grazing season, the horses can spend day and night on pasture. Their everyday world expands across open areas, slopes, forest edges and places where trees offer shelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The herd has its own rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one moment the horses graze close together. Later some move towards the forest while another stays behind to eat. Familiar friends find one another. Someone rests. Someone keeps moving from one patch of grass to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the people who know the horses, there are familiar details to notice: who chooses whose company, who is first to move and who is content to stay a little farther away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer work follows alongside them. Fences and water need checking, pastures are watched and the animals are still observed every day even when their living area has grown much larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is summer at Ronivaara: horses, grass, forest, long light and the ordinary work that keeps everything going.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Summer has its own rhythm here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The herd moves between grass, slopes and forest shade. Long northern days leave time for grazing, resting, wandering and simply being together.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Autumn \u2013 ruska, colder mornings and work before winter<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Summer does not suddenly turn into winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First the evenings grow darker. Then green begins to give way to yellow, red and brown across the hills and forests around Ronivaara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is ruska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mornings become cooler. The first frost settles on the ground. The pasture season begins to draw to a close, and familiar summer routines change again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is work to do before winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pastures are looked over after grazing, and the farm begins to prepare for snow and cold. Things that need attention are easier to see while the ground is still open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the forest can be at its brightest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trail that was deep green only weeks earlier runs through autumn colour. Then one cold morning the first snow may settle over it, and the year starts turning again.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Some things belong to nearly every day. The same place, a different day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals need feeding and checking. Their living areas need care. Something needs carrying, cleaning, opening, closing or putting back where it belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other jobs return with the seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring uncovers what winter has left behind. Summer brings pasture work. Autumn prepares the farm for cold weather. Winter brings snow back into the daily routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the same job is rarely exactly the same twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gate needs attention. A path has worn in a new place. One pasture needs more time before the horses return to it. Overnight snow has changed yesterday\u2019s easiest way through the yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of farm life is like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You notice what the day has brought and begin from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year keeps giving the next job.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The same horses, another season<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is perhaps the easiest way to understand the year at Ronivaara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Finnhorse standing beside you in a snowy yard in February may be out on a green hillside pasture in July. In autumn, the same horse walks through fallen leaves. By winter, snow has covered the ground again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The horse is familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The place is familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything around them has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same happens around the farm. A forest trail disappears beneath snow and opens again in spring. Summer growth reaches its edges, autumn changes its colours, and frost hardens the ground once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those of us who live here, the turning year is made of both change and recognition. Something is always returning, but never quite in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow belongs here. So do spring mud and running water, pasture, rain, insects, ruska, frost, darkness and long summer evenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year is not scenery around Ronivaara. It is part of the life we share here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
