Gentle Family Finnhorse Programme

First Finnhorse Experience for Families at Ronivaara is a gentle, hands-on horse farm experience for families who want to step into the world of horses together. The experience begins at Ronivaara Farm, where your family meets a Finnhorse, spends time close to the horse, brushes it and takes part in caring for it together with your guide.

This first part is at the heart of the experience. It gives both children and adults time to become familiar with the horse before the ride, notice its calm presence and learn how to act around horses in a clear and respectful way. At Ronivaara, meeting the horse happens at an unhurried pace, with the horses’ wellbeing first.

After caring for the horse and receiving a safety briefing, your guide takes the family on a short, easy-paced trail ride from the farmyard towards the forest, open countryside and the hill scenery of Ruka-Kuusamo. The ride is designed for families and first-time guests. Suitable for families with children of different ages; younger children can be led when needed, helping the experience feel comfortable and reassuring.

Help is provided with mounting, and Ronivaara’s mounting ramps are used when needed. Depending on the participant, horse and situation, it may also be possible to ride without a saddle using a supportive riding belt. This makes the experience approachable for different kinds of family members.

The Finnhorse is at the heart of the experience. It is Finland’s native horse breed: strong, wise, versatile and trusting by nature. Ronivaara’s Finnhorses are steady, kind and people-oriented horses, making them well suited to a family’s first shared horse experience.

A Family Memory Built Around the Horse

This experience is for families who want to meet horses gently and share something meaningful in nature. Before the ride, children and adults have time to get close to the horse by brushing, caring and becoming familiar with its presence. This makes the trail ride feel more natural, reassuring and memorable for the whole family.

Best for first-time families, young children and guests who want to meet a Finnhorse before riding.

At Ronivaara, the family experience is built around shared time, clear guidance and respect for the horse. The Finnhorse, the peaceful farm setting, the short trail ride and the support of your guide create a warm introduction to Finnish horse culture in Kuusamo.
